When is Rakhi 2014?

By
Rakhi 2014

The festival of Raksha Bandhan holds special significance to the Hindu community of India. This festival is completely dedicated to the siblings. Brothers and sisters who stay abroad try to be with their loved ones on this auspicious day. The festival calls for massive celebration that includes grand feasting, sharing gifts, cracking pranks & jokes and merrymaking.

Why Rakhi celebrated on Purnima Day of Shravan month?

As per Hindu calendar, this festival is observed on the month of Shravana. Hindus consider this month as the holiest month of the year. The name of the month is derived from the name of the ruling star, ‘Shravan’ that rules this month during the full moon day. The month is marked with various religious ceremonies and festivals. Each day of the month has some importance but the full moon day is significant and auspicious day of all. Thus, Rakhi being an important Hindu festival, is celebrated with great faith and devotion by the siblings, on the full moon day, of the month of Shravana. According to Gregorian calendar, this auspicious day corresponds to the month of July-August. The date of the festival is not fixed. Each year the festival is observed on different dates. In 2014, Rakhi is on 10th August.

Rakhi is known in different names in various parts of India. In the Malabar region, the festival is known as Nariyal Purnima or Coconut Full Moon; in South India it is known as Avani Avittan and in North India it is termed as Raksha Bandhan.

Hey Sis,
  When the world goes dark,
Stars are there...
  When the journey breaks up,
Hope is there...
When the entire world is vanished,
And you feel left alone...
Tilt your head and look beside you,
Will bring you comfort feeling of
Care and affection molds on you,
As your Brother is always beside you
To pour the special love and affection forever...

[ HAPPY RAKSHA BANDHAN ]

God could not take care for the whole world
so he has given mothers to each family.
In the same way mother could not take care
for the whole part of our life, so she had given brothers.
Thanks for being my brother.

Raksha Bandhan Messages & Quotes to Make The Holiday Special

By
The Hindu calendar contains many festivals, and one of the most celebrated days is the festival of Raksha Bandhan (the pledge of protection) – known as Rakhi in Hindi, Raksha Bandhan in Marathi, and Rakhi Purnima in Bengali. It is a festival that acknowledges the special bond between a brother and sister and celebrates the renewal of the vows of love, care, and protection.

The beauty of the tradition of Raksha Bandhan extends to whosoever wants to acknowledge this relationship. It is celebrated between cousins as well as mooh bola bhai-behen (sworn brother and sister).

This festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Shravana and according to the English calendar its falls in the month of August. In 2014, Raksha Bandhan is on Sunday 10 August. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, both the brother and sister wear traditional dress, pray before God, and then perform the ceremony. The sister prepares a thali (plate) that has a diya (oil lamp), kumkum (vermillion – to be applied on the forehead), rice, sweets, and rakhi (colourful thread or ribbon). Sister first performs the aarti, ties the rakhi on her brother’s wrist, and then feeds the brother the sweets, symbolizing the sweetness of the relationship.
Before this festival, shops across the country can be seen showcasing myriad Rakhis and greeting cards – but you can make your own Rakhi and greeting cards. Just click on the links to find out more.

Raksha Bandhan Messages

In order to make this day special, parents can work with the children to create homemade rakhis and cards that include Raksha Bandhan messages and Raksha Bandhan quotes. You can ask your children to write down a couplet or a few sentences that they will read out to each other after the ceremony. Having such a tradition can help make children understand the poignancy and value of this festival. The messages can be as simple as the following:

As we grow up, we act like we don’t care,
But it is just an act,
For I know you will always be there,
   Love you, brother/sister dear.

We fight for the smallest of reasons. We laugh on the silliest of jokes,
We love stepping on each other’s toes. We watch the same Sunday shows,
This list for me is never-ending. My darling brother, you are my favourite blessing.

You are there for me during happiness and joy
You are there for me in every walk of life
You are there for me in the toughest times
To hold my hand during the darkest days
To share my smiles and tears
  Happy Raksha Bandhan, brother dear!

Raksha Bandhan Wishes For Cousins

We Indians have big families, and Raksha Bandhan is eagerly celebrated by cousin brothers and sisters, too. Days before Raksha Bandhan are filled with shopping for Rakhis, greeting cards, and stamps to post them. To make this day more special and personal, sisters can create handmade greeting cards with Raksha Bandhan wishes to accompany the rakhis being sent to their cousin brothers.

You, my brother, are a friend that God gave me,
On this day of Rakhi, you are sorely missed by me.
Love & Wishes of Raksha Bandhan

My dearest brother, it is the day of Raksha Bandhan,
This Rakhi carries all the love and good moments we shared,
To remind you that this bond will not be broken,
And my prayers that God blesses you with good health & prosperity
Happy Raksha Bandhan

My brother is Miles away,
Where I cannot see his smile,
Where I cannot laugh with him,
Where I cannot hold him in my arms,
Yet he is ever in my thoughts and smiles
  Happy Rakhi, my dearest brother!

Use your positive energy, creativity and imagination to make the day of Raksha Bandhan special for your family!

Raksha Bandhan cards

How to Make a Spinning Raksha Bandhan Card

What you need:

[+] Coloured card stock or heavy paper
[+] Coloured paper
[+] Two cups or bowls that fit inside one another (to draw around)
[+] Scissors
[+] Beads or sequins
[+] Glue
[+] Coloured wool
[+] A hole-punch or darning needle

 Instructions:

[+] Fold your sheet of coloured card stock in half from left to right to form the basis of your greeting card.
[+] Take the larger of your two circular objects, place it in the centre on the front of your card, and draw around it.
[+] Use scissors to cut out the circle, leaving a hole in the front of the card.
[+] Take a different coloured sheet of card and trace around your smaller bowl or cup twice. Cut out both circles.
[+] Using the coloured paper, beads or sequins, and glue, decorate each small circle and leave to dry.
[+] Cut three 20cm pieces of wool. Turn over one of the decorated circles, spread it with glue, and then lay the three pieces of wool across the middle. Sandwich the second decorated circle on top and leave to dry.
[+] Now, braid the wool poking out of each end of the circular sandwich to form a thin rope.
[+] Punch or pierce two holes in your card on either side of your large cut-out circle with either the hole punch or darning needle.
[+] Thread each end of the braided wool through these two holes, so that the decorated circles hang in the middle.
[+] Knot the braids to the card and trim the ends.
[+] Decorate the outside of the cut-out circle – you can use sequins or stickers, or even draw or paint around it if you would like.
[+] When the glue is dry, your little one can personalise the inside of the card by putting a message to his or her loved one!

[+] Get your child to place his or her hand on the front of the card and trace around it.
[+] Thread the needle with the coloured wool and carefully ‘sew’, in and out, around the hand outline.
[+] Use several lengths of coloured wool and the beads to make a basic bracelet.
[+] Pierce two holes on either side of the wrist on the card and thread the ends of the bracelet through.
